Iron, Industry, and Incredible Views: The History of Rosedale

adminNorth York Moors, Out & About

Views across the Rosedale valley

Just 8 miles from Low Costa Mill lies Rosedale. This valley is famous for its rural beauty and dramatic scenery, including the steep incline of Chimney Bank. Today, it is a peaceful mix of sheep farming and tourism. However, the ruins of giant iron-roasting kilns tell a much noisier story.   The village of Rosedale Abbey offers visitors stunning scenery, rich history, and excellent walking trails.

A Landscape Transformed

Over 150 years ago, this part of the North York Moors looked very different. Between the 1850s and 1920s, Rosedale was a bustling mining hub. The discovery of high-grade magnetic ironstone led to rapid growth.

During this intense period, the hills were filled with fire, smoke, and noise. Over 10 million tons of iron ore were transported via a ridge-top railway. While mining ceased in 1926, the impact on the landscape remains visible today. You can still see the massive kilns that helped drive the Industrial Revolution.

Walking the “Land of Iron”

The best way to experience this history is on foot. The former railway track offers a flat path with spectacular views across the valley and surrounding countryside.

  • The 7½-Mile Circuit: This route starts in the pretty village of Rosedale Abbey. It takes you through rolling farmland and back along the old railway line. You will pass the impressive ruins of the roasting kilns along the way.
  • The Bank Top Walk: For a shorter stroll, visit the top of Chimney Bank. This easy walk along the mineral railway rewards you with stunning views and a close-up look at industrial heritage.

On our recent spring walk, the weather was perfectly clear. We could even hear the haunting cry of the curlew in the distance.

Refreshments in Rosedale Abbey

After your walk, the village of Rosedale Abbey offers plenty of options. We highly recommend Graze on the Green. This small, family-run tea room has a fabulous selection of light lunches and homemade cakes. Their fresh bread is also perfect to take away!
