May is National Walking Month, making it the perfect time to explore the North York Moors. One of our absolute favourite routes is the easy circular walk connecting the villages of Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham. During springtime, the fields are alive with wildflowers and playful lambs making the views truly delightful.
A Charming Moorland Circuit
This delightful 4.5-mile walk connects two of the prettiest villages in the area. You will enjoy a mix of quiet country lanes, open moorland tracks, and peaceful fields.
The route takes you across the Spaunton escarpment. From here, you can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. It truly is a “cracker” of a walk, especially with a cozy country pub waiting in both villages!
Stepping Back in History
Your journey begins in picturesque Hutton-le-Hole, a village that is truly as pretty as a picture. As you head out, you will pass the fascinating Ryedale Folk Museum. We highly recommend making time for a visit here to see local history come to life.
Heading across the open moorland towards Grange Farm, be sure to stop and look back. You can see the road winding through the North York Moors all the way up to Blakey Ridge. After passing through the quiet hamlet of Spaunton, you will descend through the woodlands into Lastingham.

Discovering Lastingham’s Hidden Gems
Once in Lastingham, take a moment to visit St Mary’s Church. The 12th-century crypt is a hidden wonder. As you descend the ancient stone steps, you can’t help but wonder how many people have trodden them over the centuries.
While in the village, you can also see St Cedd’s Well, a decorative 19th-century fountain. If you are feeling thirsty, pop into the Blacksmiths Arms for a refreshing drink or a delicious Sunday roast.
The final leg of the walk takes you back across the moorland and down into Hutton-le-Hole. For a post-walk treat, try The Crown or The Barn Tea Rooms.
