York City Walls
Have you ever wandered along York’s incredible City Walls? If not, you’re in for a treat! These amazing walls date back to the 13th century, are packed with history and offer a fantastic way to see York from a whole new perspective. It’s like taking a step back in time!
The walls are around two miles, so we recommend setting aside at least a couple of hours to really soak it all in and enjoy the sights. Just follow the golden discs on the pavement to explore.
You can join the walls at many different points, Micklegate Bar is the traditional royal entrance to the city. These “bars” were actually gateways into the City where folks used to pay tolls.
Bring your camera for stunning views of York Minster, the iconic York Railway Station, the River Ouse, and the majestic Clifford’s Tower. You could even take a little detour into the beautiful Dean’s Park behind the Minster to say hello to Paddington!
Essential info
The walls are free and open daily from dawn until dusk.
Dogs are not allowed, except assistance dogs.
Pushchairs and wheelchairs are not permitted due to steps and narrow sections.
