Nature on Our Doorstep: The Spectacular Wildlife at Low Costa Mill

Nesting Swan and newborn Cygnets on the nest at Low Costa Mill

One of our greatest privileges of living at Low Costa Mill is watching nature unfold right in front of us.

Living here, it is easy to take our surroundings for granted. However, hearing our guests’ wonderful stories this summer reminded us how lucky we truly are to spot wildlife at Low Costa Mill.

Unforgettable Birdwatching & Pond Life

Recently, one young visitor was absolutely over the moon. He managed to spot—and photograph—our resident kingfisher! Furthermore, he proudly informed us it was a male.

Our peaceful pond attracts a wonderful variety of wild birds and aquatic life throughout the year. Depending on the time of year,  you might spot

  • Mating swans and their adorable cygnets
  • Ducks, moorhens, and Canada geese
  • Egrets fishing quietly along the water
  • Darting dragonflies and croaking frogs

The magic doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, either. Last week, a guest equipped with a bat detector picked up dozens of Pipistrelle bats swooping and dancing over the ponds at dusk! You can watch a clip of our nightly visitors on YouTube here.

Butterflies in the Garden

Our gardens are currently buzzing with life. Thanks to our fabulous buddleia bushes, hundreds of butterflies visit us daily.

In particular, Peacock and Comma butterflies are the most common visitors. However, you will easily spot plenty of other colourful species dancing through the flowers!

Secret Encounters in the Big Field and Woods

The big field has been an absolute treasure trove this year. A whole host of local wildlife has made an appearance.

For example, herons often stand “on-guard” near the grass. Additionally, several pairs of hares love hopping around in the early morning. If you look closely, you might even spot a deer wandering peacefully past.

Keep your eyes peeled (and ears open) near the trees, too! We were thrilled to recently spot a majestic Tawny Owl perched quietly in the woods—a truly magical sight to catch in broad daylight.

Slow Down and Reconnect with Nature

Moments like these remind us how special it is to call Low Costa Mill home.

A stay here offers a gentle reminder to take time, slow down and appreciate the little things. It is truly amazing what is hiding just outside your holiday cottage door!
