At Low Costa Mill, we understand that your dog is part of the family! That’s why we warmly welcome your four-legged best friend to five of our seven charming self-catering cottages. We keep two cottages pet-free for those with allergies or preferences. Usually, we happily accommodate up to two dogs per cottage. However, if you’re traveling with three smaller dogs, or if the size of your cottage allows, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Planning Your Pawsome Dog-friendly Getaway
We know that bringing your beloved pet along for the adventure requires a touch more planning than a typical holiday. But don’t worry, we’re here to help!
First and foremost, double-check that your chosen cottage is dog-friendly! While it might seem obvious, it’s absolutely crucial to confirm, especially since two of our cottages at Low Costa Mill are lovingly kept pet-free. We want to ensure both our human and furry guests have the perfect stay.
To make your dog’s holiday as enjoyable as yours, we’ve created an enclosed dog exercise paddock. It’s the ideal space for those energetic zoomies, playful ball games, and some much-needed off-leash fun.
Paws Prepared: Vet Details at Your Fingertips
We all hope for a smooth and healthy holiday for our furry companions, but it’s always best to be prepared! Just in case you need a vet during your stay at Low Costa Mill, we recommend noting down the details of the nearest vets.
- Ryedale Vets Pickering: 133 Eastgate, Pickering, YO18 7DW. Tel: 01751 472204
- Grace Lane Vets: Weighbridge Cl, Kirkbymoorside, York YO62 6FD. Tel: 01751 432777
We hope you won’t need them, but it’s always comforting to know they’re close by, ensuring peace of mind for both you and your four-legged friend!
Home Away From Home: Keeping Your Dog Comfortable
What to pack for a dog-friendly holiday at Low Costa Mill? We understand that even the most adventurous dogs can find travel a little unsettling. Being away from their familiar surroundings and routines can sometimes cause a bit of stress. But don’t worry, we’ve got some simple tips to help your furry friend feel right at home at Low Costa Mill!
First and foremost, bring along familiar items. Stick to your dog’s usual toys, blankets, and anything else they’re used to. Introducing new items during your trip can add unnecessary stress. Think of it as packing their comfort kit!
Secondly, try to maintain their routine as much as possible. This could mean feeding them and taking them for walks at their usual times. A little bit of consistency goes a long way in keeping them happy and relaxed.
And lastly, remember those familiar scents! Bringing items that smell like home can be incredibly comforting for your dog.
Just a friendly reminder: please avoid leaving your dog alone in the holiday cottage. It’s a new environment for them, and they’ll feel much more secure with you nearby. We want their stay to be as enjoyable as yours!
Pack Smart: Don’t Run Out of Doggy Essentials!
We all know holidays are for relaxation, not last-minute panics! Running out of dog food or other essentials can definitely put a damper on your getaway, especially if your furry friend is particular about their brand or type of food.
Our top tip? Plan ahead! Figure out how much food your dog will need for the duration of your stay, and then pack a little extra, just in case. Keep it fresh by storing it in sealed, airtight containers. The same goes for any medicines your dog might need.
And speaking of supplies, you’ll be happy to know that Pickering has a fantastic independent pet store! They’re a real lifesaver if you need anything extra, from food, treats, leads to… well, pretty much anything your dog might desire! You’ll find them open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday, and they always offer a warm welcome.

Walkies! Exploring the Best Dog-Friendly Trails
Now for the fun part: walkies! We know nothing makes your dog’s tail wag quite like a good adventure, so planning some fantastic walks in advance is a must.
We’re incredibly lucky to be nestled on the doorstep of the North York Moors! This means you and your furry friend have a wealth of walking options, right from our doorstep or just a short drive away. However, please remember that livestock, including sheep and Highland cattle, often roam freely on the moors. For their safety and yours, we recommend keeping your dog on a lead or close at heel when exploring the North York Moors. You can find some of the best dog walks in the North York Moors National Park right here.
And for those who love the coast, we’re just a 40-minute drive from the stunning Yorkshire coastline, including Scarborough, Whitby, and all the charming bays in between! Please be aware that some of the busier beaches have restrictions during the summer months, so always check the local council’s guidelines before heading out.
For year-round dog-friendly beaches in Yorkshire, we recommend:
- Cayton Bay
- Robin Hood’s Bay
- Runswick Bay
- Staithes
With so many incredible places to explore in Yorkshire, you and your family (including your furry members!) will be spoilt for choice!
We’re confident that you and your dogs will have a truly memorable stay at Low Costa Mill, discovering the wonders of the North York Moors and the beautiful Yorkshire coast.
