If you’re staying at Low Costa Mill and looking for reasons to visit Thornton-le-Dale, read on. This charming village makes a perfect day out. It’s one of those places that feels instantly welcoming, relaxed, and quietly special.
Located on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, just a few miles from Pickering. Thornton-le-Dale is perfect for a gentle walk, a slow wander, and of course, a well-earned ice cream.
The village is known for its scenic walks, cosy tea rooms, and friendly atmosphere. In addition, car enthusiasts may also recognise Mathewsons, home of Bangers and Cash. While you’re there, take a minute to explore their gift shop filled with classic car memorabilia.
Thornton Beck winds its way through the village and adds to the peaceful charm.
Sitting right on the bend is Beck Isle Thatched Cottage, one of the most photographed houses in Yorkshire. Nearby, the large grassy area is ideal for paddling in the beck on warmer days.
And there are plenty of benches where you can sit, relax, and simply enjoy the surroundings.

Thornton-le-Dale and Ellerburn Walk
One of our favourite ways to explore the area is the Thornton-le-Dale and Ellerburn circular walk. At just two miles, it’s an easy and enjoyable route that suits most abilities.
The walk follows riverside paths and quiet country roads, passing fields, woodland, and the small hamlet of Ellerburn. You’ll also pass St Hilda’s Church, Ellerburn, which is well worth a short pause.
Springtime brings lambs in the fields, while autumn colours make the woodland especially beautiful. Our favourite part is wandering through the village, admiring the cottages, gardens, and colourful flowers along the way.

Interactive Nature Trail
Thornton-le-Dale is especially lovely for families, thanks to its interactive nature trail. From the village centre, cross the quaint bridge over the beck to reach the pond area. This peaceful spot sits beside the river, where you can watch the water cascade gently over the weir. As you walk around the pond, you’ll spot wooden posts marked with numbers and QR codes.
These form a child-friendly nature trail, designed to encourage exploration and learning. The trail shares interesting facts about local wildlife and the surrounding environment.
Look out for wooden carvings hidden in trees and tucked around the pond. Remember to look up as well as down — they’re easy to miss.
The pond is home to a variety of pond life, and there’s even a magnifying sink for pond dipping. Helpful signs show what creatures you might find, and bug hotels are dotted along the route.
The path is pram and wheelchair friendly, making it accessible for everyone. Picnic tables are available if you’d like to linger and enjoy a relaxed lunch.

Ice cream and chocolate treats
No visit to Thornton-le-Dale feels complete without something sweet.
The Chocolate Factory
The Thornton-le-Dale Chocolate Factory is a must for chocolate lovers. This family-run business produces handmade chocolates, truffles, fudge, and ice cream. It’s a lovely place to pick up a treat or a gift to take back to Low Costa Mill.
Baldersons
Baldersons is another village favourite and well worth a visit. Their dairy ice cream has been made on the premises since 1985. The range of flavours is impressive, and portions are generous. One scoop is rarely enough — you have been warned. There’s also a fabulous cafe next door, perfect for a light lunch or a slice of cake.

A simple and affordable day out
One of the best things about visiting Thornton-le-Dale is how little it costs. Aside from parking and a well-deserved ice cream, most of the village can be enjoyed for free. There’s a large car park in the centre of the village. Passing the pond, it’s a short and easy walk into the heart of the village.
Thornton-le-Dale is one of North Yorkshire’s most charming villages. It’s an easy day out from Low Costa Mill and a place many guests return to again and again.
