The market town of Pickering is often known as “The Gateway to the Moors”. The town itself, and the beautiful and varied locations around Ryedale and the stunning North York Moors, market towns, and villages are as popular as always on film.  Here are a few of our favourite locations which are easy to visit while staying at Low Costa Mill.

Pickering Station and North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Pickering Station and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway often appear in the movies. Filming of the opening scences of Downtown Abbey & Dads Army took place here. All Aboard is the new popular television series about NYMR. Going behind the scenes at this busy heritage railway, featuring both the staff, the volunteers, and the trains for an interesting mix of adventures.

Goathland station, is a few stops along the line, or a scenic drive across the North York Moors. The renowned Harry Potter film feature Goathland Station, which many will recognise as Hogsmeade. The film included the station and many of its buildings.

The pretty little village of Goathland along with the station is well known to many as Aidensfield, the home of Heartbeat, the extremely popular 1960s police drama series.  The village has plenty of 1960s memorabilia, the local pub is just like the “Aidensfield Arms”, Scripps garage along with the classic cars and 1960s police cars finish off the look.

Full of interesting locations to explore Helmsley is a thriving market town set on the edge of the North York Moors national park.  Filming of “The Secret Garden”, a new version of the classic children’s story , took place around Helmsley.  Key locations to look out for in the film include Helmsley Walled Garden (THE secret garden) along with nearby Duncombe Park and Helmsley Castle. Filming of many scenes in the Secret Garden took place in various locations around the North York Moors national park, see what you can spot.

Castle Howard

Castle Howard is a 300 year old impressive country house, set in superb grounds within the Howardian Hills. It makes a perfect location for a period drama, and many have been filmed here. The 1980s TV drama series Brideshead Revisited showcased much of the house.  More recently, scenes from Downton Abbey, Death Comes to Pemberley and Victoria have also been filmed here at Castle Howard.  However it’s not just period dramas that work well here. For instance, Arctic Monkeys also filmed their music video for the single Four Out of Five in Castle Howard.
